If they know you well enough to speak to either your work product or character, then feel free to include them, assuming they give you permission. You should probably also include someone from you group (staffer, group head, etc.) as well though.
You should always ask anyone you include as a reference for their permission in advance.
Yeah, I have checked with them and they are fine with me using their name. I was wondering though if prospective firms/companies would look down upon it in a brown-nosing sort of way.
I have an Insurance company CIO, a pension fund CIO and a former local stock exchange CEO as references ... Everyone knows them, but it's just another reference. It's not worth as much as I thought. People think that If they haven't hired you, there must be a reason...
