Chance of moving internally within BB

Hi all,

Can anyone share what are the chances of changing divisions internally for BBs? For example doing a summer internship in Markets/ER and deciding to switch to IBD for the Grad Program. Or switching divisions after working FT for around 2 years in.

Thanks!

I think switching after doing a few years is common (or maybe I shouldn’t say “common” but rather an acceptable thing to do, not unheard of). As for switching after your summer internship, I know one person in my intern class (Barclays) who moved from Markets to Banking, but I think you need to make it abundantly clear early on. So a few weeks into the internship - not day 1 of course - have a meeting with HR and tell them you’ve decided you want to make a switch. The complication is that they might not take it all that seriously if you don’t tell them that you’re not willing to accept an offer unless it’s for the other division. That’s what my buddy told me he had to do and there’s a level of risk with that of course because if there’s not a position available or they don’t want to let you switch, you have to be prepared to walk. Maybe your bank will be super accommodating - the best advice is just do a great job in your current role so that they’ll want to retain you and not let you go to a competitor even if it’s not the division you’re currently in. Good luck!
