Confused over lateral?

I am an analyst (commercial) at a BB. I was contacted by a mid-corporate associate about applying for a position that opened up with his group. I originally interviewed with him during recruiting season, and he said I was his top choice at the time. After emailing the MD my resume, he called me almost immediately and we spoke for a few minutes yesterday. The Director mentioned they were interviewing one other person, (not with the bank) but that if I was the most qualified, I'd be picked?

I thought that was kind of obvious, but do you think since they already had the interview scheduled with the other person for two weeks (his interview is next Monday), he couldn't just give it to me now. Or am I really in a 50-50 shot here? Just want to manage my expectations.

Most banks will still be interested in running some sort of competitive hiring process. I was in a similar situation over the summer, but roles were reversed. I was an outside candidate competing against an internal lateral. The MD and analyst that I had networked with expressed interest, but told me that the bank liked to hire internally. The internal candidate received the job.

I wouldn't worry about things too much. The group already expressed interest in you, and you are already (hopefully) familiar with your bank's commercial group, products, culture, etc. Your hire would make things easier on them.
