Countries for English Speakers?

Significant other and I want to leave the US and live elsewhere sometime in the near future before we have kids. My background is finance and I’d like to continue doing that. What countries are options for someone who only speaks English? Obviously Canada, but any of the Scandinavians? Netherlands? Denmark?

I think you need to give more criteria here dude.

If you are good at getting offers, basically every major city will have firms that are English-first, even if it's not an English speaking country. It obviously varies a lot per country, but at worst basically every country has at least some sort of expat-run business and finance community that will be English speaking. There's a reason that literally everyone else in the world actively takes it upon themselves to learn English in order to better advance their business prospects.

Are you trying to go somewhere that feels really foreign? Are you specifically trying to advance your career in a way that will be transferable back to the US? Are you trying to live somewhere with a low cost of living? Hot climate? Cold climate?

You need to go into further detail, otherwise this is just a thread of totally arbitrary answers.

Fair enough - more info below: - I have no other language skills. - I would like to stay front office finance (currently in MM private equity here, would like to stay in some sort of investment role). I think this is the biggest holdup as it seems like almost every front office job listing I’ve seen requires some degree of foreign language except for English-only countries. This is where some color would be most helpful. - Cold or mild climate. - Preferably Europe. - I’m not concerned about building new marketable skills to boost my career when I return. So long as I’m doing something interesting it’s okay if my career prospects are more or less the same as when I left. - I don’t mind high-tax regimes or any of that, so long as I’m paid enough to live comfortably while we’re over there.

England / London Switzerland, Zürich Germany, Frankfurt

I know bankers in all of these places who don't speak the local language and they are fine. Scandinavians do speak English, pretty fluent as well. But it would help if you picked up the local language. Also, FO job offers from there will be a rarity.

Didn't know there were large predominantly Urdu- and Hindi-speaking banks with FO roles in London.
