I think there is a decent shot because I am a sophomore. If I talk to HR and coffee chat with some M&A analysts during my internship, I think I could find my way in. (Easier said than done ofc) Do you think it would be better to try and get recruited at a different bank?

IMO I would avoid trying to lateral within the same firm. Kill it during the summer and get the return off and try to get an offer in IBD at another firm. You need to get your story straight for why you want to do the switch but since it’s only your sophomore internship then it shouldn’t be that hard IMO.
My rationale for trying to lateral into IBD/Research is a greater interest in modeling and financial analysis. I enjoy forecasting and illustrating valuations in multi-segmented models. I hope my chances are a bit higher because I am a sophomore.
Sounds like a good rationale. Try to see if you can get an early offer during the spring or get the return offer and use that to recruit for IB at other firms. I tried lateraling before from SA to FT and it burned me. Play it carefully.
