Did I screw the pooch?

Cold emailed my way into a coffee chat with a MD of Equity Markets at a BB bank. A current summer intern in a different division of said bank shooting for the stars, and I was able to get a call. Asked about when/why he decided to narrow in on IPO deals (was a former consultant), what analysts have done to provide him value in the past, and asked him about some deal's he's been involved in recently. End of the call he referred me to two associates to speak to next. Asked him for advice and he basically said "keep doing what you're doing".Guess my question is, I didn't really have an ASK. Did that make me come off more genuine, or do I just look like a punk who wasted his time. Got a phone call scheduled with one of the associates for this week, so I guess it wasn't completely meaningless. Trying to network into the group that's involved in the hiring process, is this the way to go or am I chasing rainbows? Want to hear what you all think about how I played it.
