Ditching Great Job/Life in London -> Chasing NYC For The Next Step
Hi guys, just wanted to see what you would make of my current situation and envisioned next steps for my life/career - would you do the same?
Current situation
Location: London
Age: 24
Academic Background: Bachelor's + MSc from two strong finance targets
Career so far: 3rd year analyst in a mid-market (EUR 1bn AuM) private credit hedge fund (got in straight after MSc)
Job satisfaction: Quite high, I am able to drive/underwrite deals pretty much from start to finish; high exposure and responsibility, learning curve pretty high.
Pay: $140k+ (total comp) in addition to some carried interest
Personal Life: Pretty good - hours are alright, 85%+ weekends off, 8 months+ of the year I am out by 8/9pm.
Long-term relationship, friends scattered around the place.
So what happened?
London life became too comfortable and routine, which doesn't match my Type A/ENTJ personality. In short, I got bored and feel like I need a brand new challenge to enrich/further myself.
I visited NYC for some family living there (not doing touristy things, just hanging out), ended up seeing a few friends (who work in related industries) and joining them for dinners, drinks, parties etc. and loved the vibe, lifestyle etc.
What do I want to achieve?
Ditch my London life in its entirety, start completely afresh (but doing what I do now), out in NYC. I want to learn my niche in a new market, meet new people personally and professionally and generally take the opportunity to develop myself and my identity in a whole new way. As far as I am aware, I could do this via:
H1-B (through networking): find someone who will agree to sponsor (I know this is very difficult and is currently subject to a 40% lottery probability)
L-1: Join a bigger, global firm in London, work for a year and transfer out
MBA: Consider a prestigious MBA programme/apply for scholarships to make it financially less painful and go in from there
I consider this to be one of the last chances I have to make a completely fresh start and reinvent myself (can't do this at 30). But would you take such an opportunity, or am I taking everything for granted?
