Do not have contacts in a firm

Hey guys,

I saw Nomura risk solution group's job post on school career website. I realized I do not have any contacts in this company (they held networking events before and I got some contact information but its like a year ago). Applied anyways. Should I start coffee chats by linkedIn Inmail employees at this group or email HR people? What do you guys usually do if you do not have contacts in a firm?

When you say you don't have any contacts, do you mean no one you know, or no one in your entire network? Keep in mind your network includes anyone who went to your school, high school, summer camp, etc. It can even be if someone is from the same state as you (and the position is in another state), same college athletic conference, or a mutual connection through someone you know. Cast as wide a net as possible before you start completely "cold" emailing people.

Hi Copecre, thanks for your reply. I believe I have some alums working at Nomura. Should I start Linkedin inmail them and say "im really interested in xxx, could we arrange a 20-min short call for me to better understand what life is like in Nomura?"

Definitely would email over inmail. You can send something as simple as "Hi x, I'm currently a senior at College and saw a job posting for [postion] on our career services website. I'm extremely interested in [the company] and would love to learn more about your role. If you have some time in the next week or so, I'd love to talk a little more about the company and any advice you may have. Do you think we could hop on the phone for a quick call?"

Just a follow up, after I get coffee with them, how can I ask them to refer me? Dont want to seem too aggressive.
