I am just curious to know, do cover letters actually matter? The reason I ask is because I have a few friends that are in PE and IB. They said they only submitted resumes when applying for jobs. What is your opinion on this? Any of you know any recruiters that just turn away applications without cover letters? Can cover letters convince recruiters to take a candidate for an interview?

Career switchers should have one, weaker candidates should have one, and cold emailing should include one. That's my opinion. Obviously the strong target kids won't need one and writing one for online apps won't be much use.
