Its probably less of, build an international presence - get CEO, and more of the position you put yourself in to be trusted with a firms international expansion that gets you CEO.

Does this make sense?

You see this in a lot of current CEOs where they were tasked with building out a large function of these large firms and then they became CEO following the expansion.

Here are just a couple that come to mind.

Bob Igor ABC COO -> Head of Disney international operations -> CEO

Jane Fraser Latin american Operations for CITI -> Head of US Consumer banking -> CEO

Yeah its more like - already a rockstar and given a ton of responsibility - continues to be a rockstar with increased responsibility - therefore becomes CEO candidate
