E-mailing Alumni

When e-mailing alumni through info listed on my school's alumni database, would it be better to send the email to the address they listed on the database (usually a personal email), or to their work email? (guessing by using [email protected], etc.)

started emailing alumni recently but my response rate has been rather poor, been wondering whether this makes a difference.
