Effectively making first contact
Hey all!
Just a quick question: I connected with a guy over LinkedIn with whom I want to conduct an informational interview and hopefully develop a relationship for recruitment season at his place of work. We have one connection in common, but have not yet met or talked. I would like to get you guys' take on what would be an appropriate way to ask this guy for a few minutes of his time. Should I invite him out for coffee? Lunch? What would you guys do?
Thanks for any advice or comments.
Ask for a phone call first, and if you guys click during the conversation, in the end ask him if it's okay to ask him out for coffee when you happen to be in the area he works; then follow up in the email a bit later offering a certain time span for like several days or a week and ask him which date would work best for him for a chat over coffee, then settle on a time.
Usually propose more specific time windows for a phone conversation ("I'm free between 10AM and 4PM on MWF and after 1PM on T/T, when should I call?"), and it can be more lax for a in person meeting ("I'll be in the city from Tuesday to Thursday, ...").
