Exit-Opps For Big 3 Ratings?

I saw a post almost a decade ago regarding this, but feel like salary and market conditions (especially post-Covid) have changed since then. Looking to also know if I'm pigeonholed for business school if I'm looking to jump to buy-side?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a Big 3 ratings agency (S&P, Moody's, Fitch) to the buy-side is possible but can be challenging. Here are some key insights:

  1. Exit Opportunities:

    • Buy-Side Roles: Moving to asset management, hedge funds, or private equity is feasible, especially if you have experience in credit analysis or structured finance. However, these transitions often require networking and demonstrating strong financial modeling skills.
    • Corporate Finance: Many professionals transition to corporate treasury or FP&A roles within companies.
    • Consulting: Some pivot to consulting firms, leveraging their analytical expertise.
    • Business School: Pursuing an MBA is a common route to broaden opportunities and pivot to more lucrative roles.
  2. Pigeonholing for Business School:

    • Working at a ratings agency is not necessarily a disadvantage for business school applications. Admissions committees value diverse experiences, and your analytical background can be a strong asset. However, you’ll need to articulate your career goals clearly and demonstrate leadership potential.
  3. Post-COVID Market Conditions:

    • The buy-side has become more competitive, with firms seeking candidates who bring immediate value. Upskilling in areas like financial modeling, valuation, and advanced Excel can significantly improve your chances.
    • Networking remains critical. Attending industry events, leveraging LinkedIn, and connecting with alumni can open doors.

If you're serious about transitioning, consider resources like WSO's Financial Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp or Private Equity Interview Prep to sharpen your skills and stand out in the competitive market.
