Extending travel for final round, weird to ask?

Got invited to a final round (flying out for in-person interviews). Company is covering my flight/hotel. I'd like to extend my stay a day or two afterward to see family who live in the area, on my own dime for the extra days.

Is it weird to ask the recruiter if I can change my own return flight, or should I just book the trip they give me and handle travel separately after? Don't want to come across as high-maintenance before I've even gotten an offer, but also don't want to miss the chance to see family while I'm already out there.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon to ask for flexibility in travel arrangements for situations like this, and it’s generally not seen as high-maintenance if approached professionally. Here's how you can handle it:

  1. Be Transparent and Polite: Reach out to the recruiter and explain your situation briefly. Mention that you’d like to extend your stay for personal reasons and are happy to cover any additional costs for the extended trip.

  2. Offer to Handle the Logistics: Let them know you’re willing to manage the flight change yourself if it’s easier for them, but you wanted to check first to ensure it aligns with their policies.

  3. Timing Matters: Make this request as early as possible, ideally when discussing travel arrangements, to avoid last-minute complications.

Recruiters are often accommodating in such cases, especially if you’re clear that you’ll cover the extra costs. Just ensure your request doesn’t interfere with the interview schedule or create additional work for them.
