Family Office Exit Opportunities

I’m currently an SA at an EB (EVR/MOE/PJT), and I’ve realized that banking hours are unsustainable for me, even for two years. It’s hard to admit, but I have to be real with myself.

I have a well connected friend who could get me a gig at a family office - 100K base and exposure across private and public equities. I am curious if this could be a good short-term spot.

Personally, I’m not looking to go the traditional MF/UMM PE route that everyone around me seems to want. In the long run, I’d like to do PE/VC in developing countries where my work has some form of tangible impact. I don’t need a crazy high salary, but I come from a working class family (my IB base is greater than my parents’ combined income), and I would like to be well off.

Would taking this family office gig get me in the ballpark of where I want to go? How are MBA prospects if I decide to recruit for B-school? Am I a moron to pass up my EB offer?

Would greatly appreciate any thoughts.

Without knowing the specifics of your family office gig, it is hard to evaluate. Some of the top-tier family offices have built-out teams that would give you good deal flow and experience. However, others are highly unstructured and may have sporadic deal flow and a lack of training. Generally, I think it is a safer bet to gain some experience in IB / PE earlier in your career and then transition later. That will preserve the greatest optionality for you, and it shouldn’t be to difficult to transition to a family office after a few years. However, if know you would be miserable at an EB, then by all means pursue something different. Comp will be lower at the beginning, but there are lots of pathways to making a decent living in this industry.

Thank you for the perspective. Truly I’m not sure what the gig would look like. It’s a small office so I’m assuming there isn’t a well structured training program
