Feel free to be completely candid, I wouldn't have posted without the expectation some abuse. Thanks.

Assertive doesn't equal asshole.

This. You should always be assertive. I will also say that it doesn't hurt to be an asshole in certain situations. Confrontation isn't always a bad thing. I happen to like it, possibly get a bit of excitement from it. Bully the weak at first and work your way up until you're completely comfortable with confrontation at all times. There will come a point where you enjoy mixing it up if you practice enough.

In my past internship experiences (all non-finance), I always get comments from my bosses and coworkers about how "well-liked" I am at the firm, how I have a "great sense of humor", etc..

How the fuck is this pertinent? Do little things like this help you get through the day or something?

You'll be fine. FYI, most people on Earth are ass holes and/or idiots, not an exclusive strand of personality only exhibited by those in finance.

People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for freedom of thought which they seldom use.

Having everyone like you is NEVER a bad thing. People like likable people - as simple as it sounds.

Plus, if you do a good job and people like you, no one is going to think you're being a jerk when you ask for a promotion, raise, etc. and you're far more likely to do well within your company.

Ask yourself this too - do you really want to work at a company where people judge you for being nice? Don't you think you'll do better at a company where you naturally fit in? I think a lot of really smart and qualified job candidates get so caught up in worrying about getting a job at prestigious company XYZ, and don't think about the job where they'll be able to both get the experience they want and also enjoy the culture.
