Follow up after meeting with current Big 4 member at school event?

I am part of an accounting club (Student Accounting Society). Every week, representatives from firms come to speak to us about random stuff. Today, about five Big 4 workers who were alumni from our school came to speak to us.

After the meeting, I went and chatted with one of the speakers for a good amount of time as I related with him about something I said. I took his business card.

The thing is, he works in tax and I am pursuing an internship in audit.

Is it worth it to still send him a follow up email? If so, should I mention that I will be applying to the firm? Something like, "hey, my name is ____. we met at ____ where we talked about ___. I plan on applying/just applied to (firm), etc. etc." Would that work? If it makes any difference, I'm pretty sure I was the only one to get his business card.

I've just recently actively started my real job search, so proper networking etiquette is still new to me.
