Following up with HR

Here's my situation:

I have a family friend who's an MD at BB IBD. Last spring I grabbed coffee with him twice to discuss ibanking, his responsibilities, etc. So he doesn't just see me as his friend's kid, but as someone looking to break into IB.

He asked for my resume and he forwarded it last April to HR asking if they could follow up with me. HR sent me an email soon after saying that applications for summer analyst positions open on their website in November and that they'll be contacting candidates in December/January about interviews.

My question is this, I'm studying abroad in January, and would therefore need an accelerated recruiting process. What's the best way to follow up with her? Should I not reach out ot her until I've finished the application on in November and then tell her about my plans to go abroad this spring? Should I explain my situation to my banker friend first or should I leave him out of it since he already gave me the contact?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. thanks

If you're friendly enough just shoot him an email and explain the situation just like you did here and ask him what he suggests. He will probably talk to HR and just give them the heads up.

Thanks for the suggestions. Would it ever be appropriate to email HR when you've been referred and ask for an informaitonal interview?

Or is that a waste of time?
