from alternative investment to IBD?

hi everyone,
is it uncommon to transfer from alternative investment division to investment banking division once you start working? i am thinking of doing my summer internship in alternative investment division but will be applying for a full-time job in IBD in 2011.
is this a bad idea? please educate me
