GPA dilemma

Hi guys,

I have a great relationship with my schools math department and I've been sitting in on higher level classes since freshman year (even though not required). I didn't sign up to audit the classes or fully register for them but I did take all the tests and I know all the professors have kept my scores in their notes in case I need them.

My question is, should I include these courses in my GPA on my resume even though they won't show up in my transcript? I know all the professors would be happy to throw my grades on a letter with their signatures so I'm unsure if I should do so.

You need the GPA on your resume to match the GPA on your transcript, because that's what employers will look at to verify your grades. Unless you can get those math grades onto your official transcript, you shouldn't factor them into your resume GPA, regardless of the professors' willingness to write a letter vouching for your grades.

Unfortunately, the above poster is correct. Your GPA in your resume should match the GPA on your transcript (excluding rounding differences). You can put the courses down as relevant coursework since you've sat in on them, but they can't count towards your GPA since technically you never took the courses in the eyes of the administration (transcript people). Good luck.

A couple issues with including them as relevant coursework:

1) Depending on the position, many math courses aren't that relevant. 2) Again, if the people reviewing your resume cared enough to verify the courses you list as relevant (unlikely, but not unheard of), they still wouldn't see those math courses on the transcript. Even though you sat it on the courses, it can't be verified unless it shows up on your transcript.

Sorry to say, but these courses are a lost cause in terms of boosting your GPA.

Both above posters are correct. What you could do is talk about it during an interview or see if those math professors could help you network. If anything it shows you have a desire to learn and have gone above and beyond what is required.
