Group Placement Woes
I am an incoming '22 IB summer analyst at a firm that does group placement. The group I am interested in is notoriously busy and one of the bigger groups within the bank. I have spoken to 10 people in the group (mostly analysts and one associate) with mostly good conversations. In my thank you emails I ask for referrals and some people don’t respond. My questions are:
- Is it ok to follow up for referrals?
- How many times can you follow up before it is rude?
- How do you know if a group has dropped you and is no longer interested?
- Worst case can you cold email people within the group (just other analysts not associates or above)
- Can you reach out to people you have spoken to a month ago and ask to hop on the phone again so they remember you for round table discussions?
I want to make sure I am doing things correctly. I do not have much Alumni help and I do not come from a family or community with anyone working in finance.
The process usually depends on the bank. If this is Barclays, usually everyone wants the best outcome for everyone so analysts will communicate if it’s not looking like you’re gonna make the cut.
Definitely definitely ask for referrals in emails, it’s the best way to network. Something simple like “As I move forward with this process, who else in the group do you recommend I reach out to?”.
If you need to cold email then fine, but try not to rely on it.
Ahh what gave the bank away! Thank you for your response. I will follow your advice. I appreciate all your help.
Also make sure to communicate that the group is your top choice before round tables
