Help a transfer student out??

Hey WSO, so I just finished my first semester at a pretty decent low/non target (Northeastern, W&M, Tulane etc). I screwed around a little too much first semester and barely got a 3.5. I really love it at my school, but I was considering transferring to a target/semi-target in order to help my chances with employment down the road. I was wondering if I should fill out transfer apps this year, or next year because my my GPA this year honestly isn't good enough to get me into the schools I want. I know that if I actually do the work I'll be able to have around a 3.7 next year. If you guys were in my shoes, what what you do? Any input is appreciated thanks!
