HireVues Etiquette for IB - & how to pass them?
Hi everyone,
Looking for some general advice on HireVues, what good things are to do and how to actually them. I find them quite awkward as I'm just talking to myself in the camera.
I don't use notes i.e. looking at them, pausing, then reading all whilst on camera, I speak clearly & loudly, & as concisely as possible (typically using PEEL framework, Point Evidence Explain Link) to answer longer questions - but over the past year of applications to apprenticeships I notice I fail mainly at this hurdle (when HVs are used). Initially, it was quite nerve-wracking which explains probably why I got rejected a lot at the start, but I've noticably improved my interview skills, yet still seems a problem area.
Conversely, 've found in-person interviews great as it's an opportunity to put a face to a name, interpret body language, and guide a conversation where you want it to go, and had relative success comparatively.
Could people suggest what I should improve on to be able to pass these HireVues or what they look for? I'm unsure what I'm missing in this and would really appreciate any hints from those who've done them before successfully.
Work in a smile here and there, watch your posture / eye contact and any kind of twitching movement (more ppl do it struggle with with this than you would think), and slip in key words from the job description. I would also do a mock interview before a HireVue just to dial in the key questions.
Hmm good idea thanks.
I guess those things are subconcious (posture, twitches etc.) so I will keep a mental note of that for next time around.
I will make an effort to try intertwining key skills more clearly in my answers too.
As for mock interviews, I need to try find a buddy to do some actual mock interviews - would you have any suggestions apart from perhaps posting on here (as i'm not in uni yet, and no finance-esque clubs at college). I try use the prompt they give you before the interview starts but it's repetitive.
Thank you for that!
I have never passed a Hirevue and I don't trust them, I don't think this is the right way to do business but alas here are my thoughts from reviewing them.
Have a dedicated microphone or a pair of wireless earbuds with a microphone.
Avoid having a dark colored background.
Place a bright light behind the camera at whatever angle gives you the brightest most natural light.
Avoid wearing anything with a fine pattern or you may disrupt the auto-focus and color balance on your camera.
