Honours Research Project - Industry or Interest?

Hi all,

I am doing an honours year next year in finance and I am at a crossroads as to whether I should pursue a topic that is challenging and interesting to me, specifically exotic options under a very intelligent phD who has a lot of industry experience in trading..or find a topic that is related to IB/PE which most likely won't be as interesting and I struggle to think of anything I could do a research paper on, especially since they have to be very specific.

I do not have interest in getting into S&T but I find derivatives much more exciting and rewarding to study, I want to get into IBD so I assume doing a paper on something within M&A, capital structure etc will be more applicable?

Does it really matter what I do the paper on? Will it see any advantage or disadvantage from going either way?

I don't find S&T more interesting, I find the study of derivatives more interesting - doesn't mean I want my career to be plugging in numbers to tell me what needs to be done for a gamma hedge etc (my understanding of S&T is low). I want to work in IBD but I don't know if I want to spend a year of my life studying the theory behind capital structure or M&A's...
