How did you choose which industry you wanted to focus on?

Will be goin through group placement and don’t really have a preference. Based on what criteria did you pick the industry/sector you wanted to be in? The culture, personal interest, randomly, …? Which sector did you end up in and would you have chosen a different one looking back?

And how difficult is it to switch sectors after a few years, are basically stuck in one after 3-4 years?

Thanks

Asked a lot of analysts about this while recruiting myself. They all gave the advice that sector matters far less than finding the people you want to work with. That being said if you have some external factors or interests, it could help you choose a group (i.e. I was interested in Tech & Healthcare outside of finance an thus focused on those groups). Don't have enough experience to comment with hindishgt though, so hopefully this works out!

Thank you! Do you think it makes sense to choose a group that’s not a “top” group at a bank and smaller compared to the others if I’m interested in that one, or does it make more sense to choose one of the better groups?

IMO there are a lot of factors to consider. Prestige in groups should only matter so much (i.e. if you want to lateral/want the best exit ops) but finding people you want to work with should make the job 15x easier. That being said if there are significant differences in deal flow & culture those are also major factors to consider. I would probably bias towards the top groups at your bank and then choose based on culture/people from those top groups. Just my 2 cents though...
