"How did you get my e-mail/name"

I've been doing the ol' find everyone's name and plug into an @company for a few days now. I've gotten a few replies, but just a few minutes ago I got an email saying, "Thank you for the note. I am just curious, how did you get my name?" I couldn't find any advice on here so I winged it. I decided to be honest, apologetic, yet sure in my actions. This is what I said:

"I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my email. To be honest sir, I found your name on a website by searching for Company advisors and then tried different emails until it went through. I apologize for being so direct but I've always believed that when you really want something you try every thing and don't let up until you either they throw you out of the building or give you the job."

I believe honesty is a big deal in our crazy world of finance. Customers value it heavily and so do employers.

Thoughts?

Yeah, not a big deal...next time you could just say you knew the e-mail format for the firm and knew his name so thought you'd reach out (you can get e-mail formats from our Company Database instead of trying 100s of combinations :-p )....

I've gotten asked this many times. Its not a bad thing, its a curiousity thing. Wouldn't you want to know the same? What if a recruiter contacted you, wouldn't you want to know how they got your info so you can utilize that if necessary in the future? Its the same thing, just be honest and say you pieced it together, no need for a detailed response to it.
