How do I respond?

Interviewing with a mid-tier consulting firm. Interviewed two months back. They were really slow getting back to me and finally told me this week that I passed into the second round. While I was waiting to hear back, I committed to another year in an international fellowship. I was up front about this possibility with the recruiter from the start but he is handing my file off to a new department and wanted to double check what my start dates are. Before when I said if I accepted another year I wouldn't be able to start until September 2013. They said we'd cross that bridge when we got there because they would probably only be able to start me in January of 2013.

Should I tell him I accepted the fellowship and wouldn't be able to start until next September (as I mentioned before)? Or should I just tell him I can start as soon as possible?

Yes, I can, but I would feel a little guilty doing so and I would like to finish it out, that said if my only option was to start before September 2013, then I would end the fellowship early.

Should I just say since the last time we talked, I decided to sign up for another year. That means my year here will end in September 2013. Is it possible to continue the interview process with a target on that date? My highest priority is obviously working with XXX firm so I am of course open to earlier start dates, but September 2013 would be ideal.

Does that work?

What do you want to do? Do you want to do the fellowship or not? I'm of the train of thought that you just tell the truth (not the same as full disclosure, you don't have to tell them they are your back-up plan, but just that you honor your commitments). Also, if you were really dying to have this job, my sense is that you would have called them earlier and told them of your impending deadline to speed things along. My sense is that you don't REALLY want that job.

Well, one of the other factors was that if I was going on their old timeline, I could only interview for location A. But I preferred about 2 or 3 other locations over A. Should I say this is my new timeline, can my file be transferred to the Location B office?

Yes, I do want this job. I took the fellowship because I didn't want white space on my resume. But now that I have accepted I want to fulfill my commitment (Yes, I realize it sounds corny and naive). I did tell them the deadline. He said go ahead and do the interview and we'll figure it out later. I followed up with them about the interview they didn't get back to me and I assumed I didn't get it, but then a couple of days a go saying sorry my file got lost in the shuffle of him switching divisions that he recruits for.
