How does a Canadian break into IB in the US via lateraling?

With TN winded down, how do Canadians get lateral opportunities in the US without citizenship? I’ve seen some Canadians lateral from big five to elite boutiques in San Francisco and New York City. Mind you they’re all from the Queens and Ivey mafias. What sponsorships do they usually get?
