How does recruiting work after graduating college/starting work?

Specifically for IBD analysts after their 2 year stint, how exactly does recruiting work for finding other jobs (assuming you don't try to go straight to business school)?

A lot of people talk about head hunters, especially for private equity, but how do head hunters actually find you? Is it the same for other roles, like transitioning into consulting/corp dev/etc?
