How fucked am I if my team figures out about my differed grad school acceptance?

Incoming IB analyst, who is excited to start working. I am not set on leaving in a year and might see myself doing IB long term if I enjoy it. However, I got accepted into a PhD program before I got my offer. If it came down to it, I would f picked IB over my PhD, but since I put a lot of work into my application and everything is at-will, I didn’t feel comfortable outright turning my PhD down. I decided to just defer it a year and have it as a back up option in case something happens with my job: I get fired/laid off or hate the job and decide to quit.

ONCE AGAIN: I AM NOT PLANNING ON LEAVING IN A YEAR. I just want a plan b in case things go poorly with IB. I’m not going to tell anybody on my team about my deferred PhD admission, but quite a few people at my school know about it since my major is kinda tight knit and I have a large friend group. I know the likelihood of it getting back to my team is small, but I am very paranoid. If my team did figure out about this, would I probably get fired on the spot? What would I say to fix the situation?

Just don’t say anything. Stop bringing up your grad school acceptance to your friends. They won’t rmb it. If the firm finds out, I don’t think u get fucked or sth. Just explain to them that u needed time to think through your education. As long as u don’t make it obvious that u accepted the grad school invite because of the reason u mentioned, it’s not a big deal

I’ll fully admit this isn’t something I have much expertise in at all, but to me this is one of those things that isn’t a huge deal once you actually start.

Hypothetically if another analyst in my group told me he was in your shoes, I wouldn’t think it’s a big deal at all. Frankly half my group has future plans sealed already, be that PE/HF/corporate. You having a potential expiration date (ik you said you wouldn’t go, but hypothetically assuming the worst here for this concept) for a PhD doesn’t seem all that different to me.

IMO stuff like this is more campus recruitment type drama whereas once you’re on the desk it matters a lot less. In general, it’s a lot easier to rescind an offer now versus firing someone once they start (and in particular once they’re trained and a useful warm body to have).

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but my guess is that it’s relatively low risk unless you’re actively putting it out there.
