How much does networking helps?

So I read somewhere on this forum, that 75% of the applicants whose cv will get through and will be invited for the interview are decided even before the summer internship applications open - just on the basis of networking. How much is this true, and I’m talking about london offices here.

Thanks in advance for the help.

at my semi-target the heads of our IB program basically said I was the top student in my batch. I let this get to my head and didn’t network at one of the groups that came to our school (top industry group)- I had gotten interviews at other banks that came to campus without networking. Anyways, I see people who are much dumber than me get selected for the interview with this group but I didn’t get selected. Learned my lesson and made sure to network at all the other banks then onwards. 2 months later Covid had caused this firm to pause its recruiting so I thought might as well network now - spoke to alums who said I’ll get an interview once they lift the pause, got the interview and killed it and got an offer (the only one from my school to get the offer) - rest is history.

Basically this story just goes to show how important networking is - make sure to network at all the banks irrespective of whether they are your preferred group or not.

yeah the people below are wrong. In london most people (including myself) get spots without networking with anyone in the firm before doing a spring/summer. Just not how it works here but if you can build a genuinely strong relationship and impress someone senior you will have advantages. Networking to get your foot into the door is really not necessary in London and rarely tangibly improves your odds. Networking to get a good group/desk after you are in the firm? Yeah important as fuck.
