How much help is an internal referral from an PWM MD during BB recruiting?

I am a non diversity and just finished my freshman year at a target and BB recruiting is coming up on the horizon for me. I am currently interning at a top BB (GS/MS) this summer as a PWM intern in NYC. My work desk got moved into my MD's office, so we chat quite a bit when there are lulls in the workday.

I told him I was quite interested in banking as a career and he proactively offered to refer me to a couple of good connections he had on the IB side and told me they were all pretty senior (SVPs and MDs). Was wondering if anyone had any experience with this type of inter-department referrals and how much influence PWM MDs can have on the IB side? I might not network too much for this bank if I can get my current MD to introduce me to connections on the IB side and push my resume for me.
