I feel like i hit a brick wall running at 200 miles another.
I've been trying my very damnest since august of 2010 to get a job with an investment bank. Starting my search in august obviously didn't help my case but over these past 6 months i've literally made a name for myself in every boutique in my city. In total i've probably had about 2 official interviews and about 3 other informationals up until this point. One of which was for what i'd like to call a mini salman brothers of my city this week except i havn;t heard back from my follow up e-mails so i think its safe to say they've gone to the next one, kind of a big blow to the ego.
I'm not giving up on breaking into IB by anymeans but I just don't know what to do to become more competitive. I sit on a 3.0 and hold a degree in political science with a minor in business from a top liberal arts school, im sitting in for cfa level 1 this june, and ive held a internship for a highly regarded boutique mutual fund company.
I realize my average is weak and i don't have a finance degree but people at boutiques still show me love, just not enough of it. Pretty much this week I realized that the biggest thing for getting any job really is your previous work experience. This week i got rapped up the butthole thanks to my limited modelling abilities. I bought the beginner modelling program thats recommended on WSO, indepth videos but didn't find it effective for learning. Any suggestions on how I can improve my model skills and display this to employers in the future once i;ve learnt?
My question is what kind of entry level jobs can i get in IB to build my modelling skills with my background? Am I shooting for the stars or am i being somewhat realistic? If i was given a shot to start as an assistant in S&T i'd do it in a heartbeat but in the long run i'm really considering research. Obviously an mba wouldln't hurt but i just finished undergrad. I'm open to suggestions and would really love some feedback
The 3.0 is a tough hurdle, especially for poli sci, which is commonly seen as an 'easy' major. Network like absolutely crazy. I mean crazy. Instead of just learning modeling, actually do it. Start a mock portfolio and apply modeling methods you learned. You gotta show serious serious dedication in the face of that 3.0.
