How to convert phone offer to a contract?

Monkies,

I have a big problem as I might mess up an already certain offer. The situation is not good, hence I really need your help. It is a very critical moment in my career. To give you a better understanding, let me describe the current situation:

  • Last Friday I received an offer via phone from a Partner of Grant Thornton in China for Transaction Advisory.
  • It was very hard for me to win this offer as I only have about 2,5 years (1 year Finance Advisory, 1,5 year Audit) work experience with a Big 4 firm in Germany.
  • I impressed them with my personality.
  • On that Friday I asked the partner (via whatsapp) to put me in touch with their HR to start with the formal process as soon as possible. Reason: My Visa expires this Sunday and it takes time to apply for working Visa.
  • It seemed that the partner did not feel comfortable with my message. He just replied: "noted".
  • The next Monday he did not get back to me until I sent him again a message (at about 8pm) stating out that "I am pleased to accept the offer".
  • The Partner replied that he received from HR the information that it is not that straightforward to apply for a working Visa and that it takes about 4 weeks.
  • I replied: "This is correct. I asked my uncle who is running a HH firm and he also said them. I also asked my uncle who is working in a German embassy who did also confirm this. However, it is fine if we apply for the working Visa before the current Visa is going to expire. It does not matter if the Visa expires when the new application is in the process."
  • 3 days passed and he did not reply yet although I told him that my Visa is going to expire this Sunday... :/

I assume that he felt offended... What shall I do? Meanwhile I could extent my Visa.. Shall I wait until he get back to me (not sure whether it is ever going to happen) or shall I send him a mail with the information that I could extent my Visa and my on-going interest? Please help, at I do really like the firm and it is very hard at the moment to find a job in China with my less work experience, particularly in Transaction Advisory.

Many thanks in advance!

This may just be me, but I dont think something like WhatsApp is a very professional method of communication, especially with a partner of the firm (maybe the reason for such a terse response). If you were able to speak with him on the phone when he gave you the verbal offer, why can't you give him a call and explain the situation more clearly over the phone, and therefore get a clear response on the spot? At the very least, pick up the phone and call SOMEONE in the office that can relay the urgency to him.

I agree with above. It's like sending a facebook message to partner asking about your offer. You're obviously going to get a better response by using your phone to call the actual office and maybe speak with HR.

Sorry PEREtzel, forgot to mention that meanwhile I could extent my Visa with hugh financial investment that I wanted to avoid. Hence, the main problem is to start again a communication and finally to receive this damn contract.
