How to network with a retired MD at an IB?

I went to a real estate conference, to network for what I do as my day job and I ran into a retired MD at a boutique Investment Bank. We got to talking and it turns out he knows my old boss at an M&A shop that I interned at.

He was very positive and jovial and we were talking about deals we were closing and he gave us high fives etc.

I got his business card and told us to reach out to him.

Now my question is that I do want to get into IB, how do I approach him about this, do I call him or shoot him an email?

What should I say, "Hey its me...blah blah...its funny how you know my boss" obviously I would use a more formal tone thats just the basic idea.

Then state how IB has interested me and if he had any advice on how I get into the business.

Or do I go straight for the kill and say if he knows any companies looking for analysts?

Thanks guys
