How to properly follow up after applying

I had a talk with this analyst a month ago and the convo went alright, they said to reach out with any questions on WhatsApp. I haven’t spoken to them since and they didn’t respond to my thank you email that I sent after.

I applied to their firm last week (late, I know) and this week they have started to roll out interview calls. We came from the same country (pretty underrepresented in IB) and same college, so I was hoping I could get them to pass my resume along. Should I WhatsApp them and ask some questions before segueing into telling them I submitted my resume, or just ask for a second call (not sure if this is annoying because it was already hard to schedule the first call),...I don’t want to come off as forcing them but of course I still need their help. Any advice on the next step is welcomed, thank you !

Navigating the follow-up process after applying for a job, especially when you've previously connected with someone at the firm, requires a delicate balance between being assertive and respectful. Based on the most helpful WSO content and insights from the WSO Networking Guide, here are some steps and tips to consider:

  1. Re-establish Connection Gently: Since you've already had a conversation with the analyst and they encouraged you to reach out with any questions, it's appropriate to reconnect. A good start would be to send a message on WhatsApp, thanking them again for their previous advice and mentioning something specific you found valuable from your conversation. This helps to make your message feel more personal and less transactional.

  2. Share Your Update: After re-establishing the connection, share your update in a way that's informative rather than demanding. You could say something like, "I wanted to share with you that I've applied to [Firm Name] last week for the [Position Name]. I'm really excited about the opportunity to contribute to the team and further my career in IB, especially at a firm that values [mention any specific values or aspects of the firm you admire]."

  3. Express Your Hope for Guidance: Instead of directly asking them to pass along your resume, which might put them in an uncomfortable position, you could frame your request for guidance or advice. For example, "Given our shared background and your valuable insights into the industry, I was hoping you might have some advice on how best to stand out in the application process or if there's anything specific you think I should highlight based on your experience at the firm."

  4. Offer Flexibility for Further Discussion: If you feel a second call would be beneficial, offer it as an option but emphasize your understanding of their busy schedule. "I would greatly appreciate the chance to speak with you again if your schedule allows, but I also understand how busy things can get. Even a few brief insights via WhatsApp would be incredibly helpful."

  5. Close with Gratitude and Openness: End your message by thanking them for considering your request and expressing your openness to any form of guidance they can provide. "Thank you so much for considering my request. Any guidance you can offer would be invaluable to me, and I'm very grateful for your time and insights."

Remember, the key is to be respectful of their time and position, while clearly communicating your enthusiasm for the opportunity and your hope for their guidance. This approach allows you to follow up in a way that's assertive but not overbearing, increasing the likelihood of a positive response.
