How to quit an unpaid intern?

Hey guys..I think I am in a dilemma..

Several days ago I accepted an unpaid intern position at a small local boutique (no contract, just a informal verbal agreement). But recently a pretty good boutique in nyc expressed their interest in me (And it is paid... although they have not made the official offer yet). Honestly, nyc opportunity is just way much more attractive. I am just wondering if it is legit for me to quit from the local boutique, after the nyc firm officially give me an offer. If I cannot quit right now...could I intern for the local boutique for another week or two and then quit it? If I do quit... would it hurt my future job hunting? Moreover, I just can't come up with a good excuse for my current supervisor...

Please give me some idea. I am not a bad person at all but I really want to grasp this opportunity.

There's no easy way around it. People have gone thru the dilemma, you could type a formal letter of resignation and give in your two weeks. Just explain your situation and take the better job offer, it sucks but you have to.

If you get the better offer just tell them a paid opportunity has come up that will really help cover your expenses for the summer or whatever....absolutely fine to move on to the better opportunity. Obviously don't mention anything till you've formally accepted the other one
