IB Summer Associate necessary background

Dear all,

What would be the optimal background/skills/experience for a summer associate in the big investment banks?

I feel kind of frustrated when they only ask for an MBA/advanced degree, but formally do not require any work experience..

Why are you frustrated? Obviously, previous IB experience would be a big plus for someone seeking an IB summer associate role, but yes, it's not required. This is because BB banks will provide training so that everyone is up to speed regardless of background, and what matters primarily is therefore leadership skills, personality, good attitude, attention to detail, etc.

If you have work experience, the better it is the more it will help you. If not, but you're in a good MBA program, then you can still be a competitive applicant regardless.
