Interesting situation.. could use some advice

Hello guys. So I have a bit of an interesting situation. I am looking for a part time winter internship. I cold emailed a principal of a big 4 firm and he forwarded my inquiry to the MD of the particular office I am looking to intern in. The guy responded, " Thanks for your inquiry, blah blah, but we are not looking for part time interns for next summer". He wasn't aware that I meant in the winter. Oh well.

It turns out a family friend knows someone at this big 4 firm as well. They asked for my resume and gave it to their contact (some guy in Marketing), and now HR has it. My question is, should I try to get back in touch with the MD (who is in the particular department I am interested in) and tell him that my resume has been submitted through a family friend and hope to talk more. Any thoughts?
