Internship Advice Needed

Hey all,

Sophomore, Big Ten state school, 3.85 GPA, solid extra curriculars, zero relevant work experience. Goal is IB.

How likely is it that I would be able to/competitive enough to get a PWM internship at a BB/MM for this summer? Is it too late to start applying? Would I be okay with just applying online through company websites? Or is it better off for me to cold email boutiques and shoot for IB there this summer, or am I too late for that as well? I regret being hesitant to do this earlier already, so hopefully not all is lost. If this doesn't go according to plan, I have a potential offer in consulting (which I am appreciative of and is better than nothing since I have zero work experience). I just don't want to spend my summer doing nothing. If I'm unsuccessful in landing an internship for the summer, I think I'm just going to go abroad. I'm double majoring, so I still have three summers ahead of me, but again I don't really want to waste this one and need to work my way up and get some relevant experience on my resume.

What would your best advice to me be considering my stats and situation? Thanks!

Sounds like you already know know what you need to do. If youre at a big state school you should have a pretty broad alumni base you could try to leverage. Focus on them as they will likely have the highest conversion rate.

It can hurt to apply online to the bigger places but chances are without a contact inside your application will go nowhere.

Spend a good amount of time over winter break cold calling boutiques, AM shops, hedge funds etc. Never know who might need someone and any kind of financial internship will help.

 

Thanks, I appreciate your input. But am I too late to the game at this point? I feel like my hesitation really hurt me. As far as I'm aware, most places are already in the interviewing process, so I feel as if I misse my chance. But I'm unsure of how the process/timeframe works for boutiques. Any insight here?
