Internship/connections help

Hey guys, this is my first post so I hope I’m putting this in the correct area. Just a question on how to use connections to aid in finding internships. I have connections in a few ways to some senior managing directors, vp's and presidents. Would it be considered tacky or intrusive to use linkedin or their emails I can get to contact the connections and attempt to get help in any way in gaining an internship in investment banking ? And if so is there a correct way to do so? Thanks guys.

Personally, if they are alumni or if you have a certain connection (contact of a contact) with this person I don't think reaching out through linkedIn is a problem. I did it a while back with alumni and they appreciated the resourcefulness. There are different perspectives on this and not everyone will agree. Getting an internship through networking isn't a seen as tacky, just be sure you go about it in a tactful way (be able to execute in networking when you do introduce/speak to new contacts). Obviously getting introduced is ideal.

09wrangerI have this same question. If i have connections through family members who worked on the street. How would you suggest I go about asking the connections to look through my cover letter and resume and asking for help? Also should i have the family member send them my cover letter and resume or should i personally do it?

I would ask the family member if it would be alright if you can reach out to the people you want to speak with. Then you can 1) either have the family member reach out to the contact to see if they'd be willing to speak with you about X.(just to be courteous, I feel like the contact would say yes anyway). Or 2) you can just get the info from the family member and introduce yourself through e-mail(and/or call). But definitely talk to the person, don't have the family member just send the resume.

I dont understand how you would think it is tacky. If you read this site, 90% of the threads STRESS networking and connections. It's better than going through online application/HR because then you have another person in your network for the future.

I wasn't sure if t was "ok" to go through family connections to get help in a internship. I don't want to be known as the kid that got the internship the wrong way. And I wasn't sure a family connection could make a difference.
