Is Investment Consulting to Buy side/ asset management possible/probable?
Was wondering if it’s possible to make the jump from investment consulting (think asset allocation and client facing role) to being an investor (asset management, LO, L/S, PE/PC/VC etc etc). Would appreciate any insights if anyone has done the jump before, and even more so without going back to school. Thanks
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from investment consulting to the buy-side or asset management is possible, but it depends on several factors:
Skillset Alignment: Investment consulting roles often involve asset allocation, manager selection, and client-facing responsibilities. These skills can be transferable to certain buy-side roles, particularly in asset management or long-only (LO) strategies, where understanding portfolio construction and client needs is valuable.
Networking and Positioning: Making the jump without going back to school is feasible, but you'll need to leverage your network and position your experience effectively. Highlighting your expertise in asset allocation, market analysis, and client management can help you stand out.
Challenges for PE/VC: Transitioning to private equity (PE) or venture capital (VC) might be more challenging without prior experience in investment banking or direct investing. These fields often prefer candidates with deal experience or a strong track record in financial modeling and transactions.
Alternative Pathways: Some professionals have successfully transitioned by targeting roles in portfolio management or research within asset management firms. From there, they’ve built the necessary investing experience to move into other buy-side roles.
Performance and Track Record: Demonstrating a strong track record in your current role, such as successful asset allocation strategies or client outcomes, can make your case stronger when applying for buy-side positions.
If you're serious about the transition, consider focusing on roles that align closely with your current expertise, such as institutional asset management or multi-asset portfolio management, and gradually work your way toward more specialized investing roles.
