Is this normal during the hiring process?

I had an interview May 1st, sent a thank you note and didn't hear back for eleven days. On May 12th, I got from the hiring manager asking if I was still interested in the position, and he would like me to come in and met his collegues. I replied to his email the same day, and haven't heard anything back as of today.

Is it normal to have huge gaps in communication during the hiring process?

It depends on what the size of the firm is, but yes, this is normal. Smaller firms don't have an official timeline, and people have to wear different hats, so some things get kicked down the road.
