Linkedin free message or Inmail?

I was trying to get in touch with a few alums on Linkedin. There is "send a message" feature - would my email get to them if I used that?

I did some reading on here and seems like most people use the paid Inmail feature.

1)What's the difference between the two (free msg and inmail) 2)And for people whom have networked via Linkedin, what is % you hear back and the time line?

I just don't want to be sending emails out with the free feature that might be not be read (say if there are ads spam etc)

Yes it would get to them. I've gotten a few messages from college seniors this year through LinkedIn.

I don't think too many, if any, people on here use the paid feature actually. They just join as many groups as possible, search the groups, and then send out emails to members of those groups. All of that is free.

Just make sure to word your subject line appropriately i.e. "_________ Senior Seeking Advice"
