Long Distance Networking

How do you network for NYC investment banks when you attend college somewhere far away? It makes sense for NYU and Columbia kids, but how do Harvard and Wharton students network when they live so far away?

If you're at Harvard or Wharton, most firms will have some sort of campus presence (On Campus Recruiting, OCR). At these schools, firms often have insight days or informational sessions where you learn more about the firm and actually get to meet some bankers.

I know some targets even help coordinate coffee chats, which are basically used for networking and even could be seen as a first round interview. There are even more formal interviews that are conducted and if they like you, you're sent straight to a Superday.

Honestly, if you're struggling with OCR, you can still network via alumni outreach and then set up a call asking for their experiences and insights into the firms they work at. Make sure to maintain these connections because networking over the phone is less memorable usually than when you meet someone in person!
