multiple references for the same firm when applying SA?
Hello, I am a junior at a target interested in SA ibd and wanted to ask your opinion before I make up my mind.
l don't want to give away too much details but I was lucky enough to get a few contacts willing to help me out for SA position (all quite senior)
two of them are specifically from the region I am interested in applying, and the other has many friends so I think he would know a few people here and there..
given that I really want to maximize my chance of getting an offer for a BB, is it okay to ask all of them to help with references for same firms?
How would HR look upon you if there are multiple people making reference? i'm guessing it would not hurt but wanted to hear other people's opinions thank you so much for your advices
There are really two levels to references. One is it is my brother-in-law's/best man's son, give him a job. The other is introducing you to mid-to-senior level people at the firms you are targeting.
I would have a discussion with them and be upfront. Let them know what you are looking for (region x IBD), ask them for advice (which will be great color on what firms/groups are on the way up or down) and finish the conversation by asking them if they have any friends at the firms you have discussed you could follow up with. Then call those people, ask a few good questions and you should get yourself several interviews assuming you have a competitive background (i.e. target school, speak the language fluently, decent grades, etc.). HR is not very relevant to this process at all, unless you have a red flag you need to explain.
i appreciate the advice. so you think one reference would be enough? so the contacts I have are already trying to help me out, as in sending out my resume to people they know who work in the firm so that they can recommend me to whoever is in charge of recruiting..I guess what I would like to know more about is whether it is okay if 2,3 people ask their friends to recommend me, as in multiple employees of the firm going for me, or whether that would be overkill.. thanks!
I don't see how it would hurt, but it might not be necessary.
okay I guess I will just make sure I have at least one reference for each firm I am applying to thanks for the advice
I think the number of references should/can be inversely related to the seniority of each reference. For example, a reference from both an analyst and a VP at one bank would be better than a reference from just an analyst, whereas a reference from an MD at another might be enough.
i see what you mean..i think their contacts are mostly associates, few vps, and then for really few higher..i will try gauge that for each firm and ask accordingly thanks
If you're being put in touch with contacts and don't have the contacts who are going to put in a good word for you already, I would reach out to all your contacts for help- not everybody they try and put you in touch with may want to/be able to help you, and so you should reach out to as many people as possible and hope that a few are able to help you.
