My recruiter switched firms, can I follow?

My recruiter has recently been recruited by a large HF (think Citadel/DE Shaw).

I am not sure how favorably he views me. I definately know he knows who I am because I was actually HIS intern for a year before getting my offer for my real internship. I even attended his farewell party.

Problem is, since he just started about a year ago he may not have much clout but im guessing he probably would be able to get me an interview?!

How should I approach him? And also, what can I expect from a HF interview?

I would just email him and tell him that you are looking to do something similar in the future. Ask him how things are going, what he likes about it, and the usual 'informational' BS. He will catch on to what you are saying, and if he likes you and knows of an opportunity he will let you know. But straight out saying you want to leave your job to come over and work for him might screw you eventually.
