Need advice on my career from a Parisian

I’m an ESCP graduate that finally got an investment banking end of study internship in a Parisian boutique. I find the job to be interesting, I think that the WLB is a bit better than average. I also have reasons to think I will get a full time offer.

Still, I have personal projects, my sport (Muay Thai) is a very important part of my life and I have a girlfriend at home. I had to stop training, and I have not enough time to do enough of what I like at night. I respect the life, I just think it’s not for me.

As I like finance I would like something that is finance related and stimulating, but let me end work at 19h/19h30 max most days to train. I was thinking small funds, Private debt, some Transaction Services teams maybe… but I don’t know if it’s realistic. I would prefer for it to not be controlling or FP&A but if nothing else exists I am not closed to it.

The thing is my internship will end just before the presidential elections, and in an already bad market I don’t know if refusing a potential FTO to look for something else would be reasonable. Plus I need the money.

My questions are:

  • Are there corporate finance jobs or teams in Paris where you end around 19h (except rush periods) ? If so where ?
  • Would I have realistic chances of getting in without a high chances of having nothing ?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Corporate Finance Jobs with Better Work-Life Balance in Paris:

    • While investment banking in Paris is known for its demanding hours, there are finance-related roles that offer a better work-life balance. Some options include:
      • Private Debt: This can be a good fit as it’s finance-related, stimulating, and typically offers better hours compared to traditional IB roles.
      • Transaction Services (TS): Teams in Big 4 firms or specialized boutiques often have more predictable hours, though there may still be occasional spikes during busy periods.
      • Small Funds: Working at smaller private equity or venture capital funds might provide a better balance, but the culture and hours can vary significantly by firm.
      • Corporate Development: In-house roles at corporates (M&A or strategy teams) often have more structured hours, though they may not always be as dynamic as IB.
      • Boutique Advisory Firms: Some smaller firms may offer a better balance, but this depends on the firm’s culture and deal flow.
  2. Realistic Chances of Transitioning:

    • Your ESCP background and IB internship at a Parisian boutique are strong credentials. However, the market conditions (especially around the presidential elections) could make the transition challenging.
    • If you’re considering rejecting a full-time offer (FTO) to pursue other opportunities, it’s essential to weigh the risks. The Parisian market is highly competitive, and IB roles are already selective, with a strong preference for candidates from target schools and extensive internship experience.
    • If you decide to pursue other roles, networking will be critical. Leverage your ESCP alumni network and connections from your internship to explore opportunities in private debt, TS, or small funds.
  3. Advice on Timing and Strategy:

    • If you’re offered a full-time role, consider accepting it while continuing to explore other opportunities discreetly. Having a job provides financial stability and keeps your resume active, which is crucial in a tough market.
    • Use your time in the role to build skills and connections that could help you transition to a better work-life balance role later.
    • If you’re set on leaving IB, start networking and applying for roles now. Highlight your IB experience, ESCP education, and passion for finance to stand out.
  4. Key Considerations:

    • Be realistic about the trade-offs. While roles with better hours exist, they may come with lower compensation or slower career progression compared to IB.
    • Ensure that your next move aligns with your long-term goals and personal priorities, such as Muay Thai and time with your girlfriend.

In summary, roles in private debt, TS, or corporate development could align with your goals, but transitioning without a gap in employment may require careful planning and networking. Accepting a full-time offer while exploring other options might be the safest approach in the current market.
