Need help on on follow up after informational interview. Thank you.
Hi guys,
I have a question about follow-up email. How to follow-up after a phone conversation besides asking for referrals? I'm trying to come up with some specific questions to ask but I really can't think of any at this point. It has been a month since I spoke with some of them so I think I have to follow up to stay on their radar. Is it a good idea to ask questions like "What can I do now to better prepare me for a specific group?" What kind of questions are good to continue the conversation?

First of all, following up once a month is too much in my opinion, unless you have a very pressing issue (active interview process) or have a very close mentor relationship with this person.
I think quarterly is a better cadence. Things you can do to stay in touch would be provide updates on your job search, send an article that is pertinent to something you've talked about with this person, congratulate them on a deal they recently worked on (if a smaller PE firm), etc.

Yes, those are all fair game. Be thoughtful in your questions and do a quick Google search to make sure it's not a question you can easily answer on your own. Questions specific to them can be good ones: what have you found to be key skills or habits in your path to success? If you were me, where would you be looking to start your career to get a good foundational skill set? I saw your firm just did this deal, what were some of the most compelling parts of your thesis? I have an opportunity to join firm x, what are some things you think I should think about as I make my decision?

Had a informational interview with a boutique valuation firm with ~8-12 employees. Got the phone chat by simply cold emailing a mid-level worker (not MD but not associate) . He asked for my resume in his reply (before the interview).
The end of the conversation resulted in him telling me over the phone (after I asked about opportunities) that the company as well as its interns mostly all come from a specific university because thats just who they hire due to familiarity, but "my resume doesn't look bad--if you're interested in interning down the line shout out to me and we'll see what I can do."
Truth be told, I am very interested in shooting for an internship for THIS summer. Is it too late? What does "down-the-line" mean in this case?
The ultimate question: What specifically do I say in my follow-up thank you email that can somehow convey the fact that not only am I very interested in interning THIS summer, I would even do it unpaid (really wanna stay home one last summer rather than find something in New York).
Is it strange/desperate to so rapidly email him interest in interning (and even unpaid) after our conversation? The conversation basically consisted of him telling me how this was not an investment bank (like I originally thought) and how his firm is different, and I really acted uninterested in a job and really focused on learning.

Hi guys. Just had an informational interview with a VP at a BB after cold emailing him. He asked me some questions, for example, tell me about yourself, whats your story, have you started application process, etc. I answered all of these decently I think, told him I had started the online application process, look forward to applying. I asked some questions about himself ( how many years had he been there, etc). He did also ask the recruitment timeline.
This is how he left it: "If any specific questions arise, please write me, I'll try to help".
What does this mean exactly? Should I send him my CV and ask him to pass to hr? or ask for a contact at hr? Or just contact him after I have applied officially?

i would personally wait till you know him a little better before asking him to submit your resume to HR. I've heard of people who receive resumes from people they've spoken to only once and they're not happy about it- why should they put their reputation on the line to recommend you when they barely know you? Other people could think differently, but that's my opinion/what I've heard.
Re: asking further questions. When filling in the online application, I'd ask him about why he likes the bank so you can talk about some of the same reasons and even subtly reference that you've spoken to someone there (I spoke with .... in .... and he said ..... which really resonated with me etc etc).
Then if you get an interview, contact him to thank him for his help so far and ask for further advice. At that point, see if he's willing to meet in person to discuss things/so you can learn more and at THAT point you may be able to ask him to put in a good word for you.

Here's my situation: had a great convo with a couple of analysts at the office. They told me to apply ASAP and sounded like they liked me. Told me they will put me in touch with some other analysts/associates at the office to speak to on the phone. It's been two days, and I haven't heard back from them - I sent them a follow-up after the call thanking them/reminding them about speaking with others at the office.
Do you think I should send a second follow-up? Is this a bad sign or are they too busy?
I would relax. Wait till after Christmas and follow up.
