Need some advice on job transition

Hi guys,

First off, great forum and thanks for all the advice.

Basically, I work at a BB in the Corporate Banking Finance group. Essentially, what this means is that this is the group that is the finance support for the Corporate Banking business. I do know that this does involve some modeling, and the training does include a working knowledge of the things the guys in the business do. However, it is not client facing/FO kind of role. A lot of the banks group these guys within the same group, just with different titles.

I'm a recent college graduate, but I guess I'm rethinking this whole gig. It does not seem as demanding as I would like it to be, so I would appreciate any insight or advice as to what you guys think I should do. After reading up on the forum, it seems like it would be better to get out earlier than later.

In an ideal world, I'd like to move into IB, but would like to hear out the options after learning about some of your experiences. Also, I come from a top non-Ivy school.

Thanks again.

The good news: You work at a BB, which is a gold star on your resume. The bad news: (I'm assuming) you don't have any previous banking experience. If you just graduated a few months back, hang in there for 3 more and start networking after 6 months.

If you start trying to move to a bank off-cycle too soon it looks bad. That said, there are a few things you can start doing now: start brushing up on your technicals and start updating your resume and cover letter. Also, put together a list of banks in your city/region/area. Finalize the resume and cover letter as soon as you hit 6 months out. Then, go down your list and start reaching out for informational interviews and meetups as well as applying online for any position that comes up if there are any.

If you play it right, you should be up on your technicals and making positive impressions on everyone you meet. Recruiting can take time for positions to open up, but the thing to remember is the longer you are there, the more WE you will have which EVERY employer values and makes you a more attractive candidate. another thing that makes you a more attractive candidate is HAVING a job. So don't quit before having something else lined up, even if it's not banking. I'm trying to transition from B4 audit now, and have gotten one offer from a really small shop but ended up turning it down. PM me if you have more questions.
